Golden Bear at the 1965 Berlinale, Alphaville is Jean-Luc Godart's 10th film, directed the same year as Pierrot the Madman. A Franco-Italian science fiction film, a fake B-movie, it is a celebration of language as the key to freedom. UFO in the Swiss director's filmography, it represents a visual and literary collage made of tributes to Orson Welles, Jean Cocteau, Metropolis of Fritz Lang or Capital of Pain of Paul Éluard.

The film also includes Jean-Pierre Léaud's first appearance on screen in a Godard film, before Pierrot the madman, Female Male, Made in USA or The Chinese woman.

Starring Eddy Constantine and Ana Karina. Designed by Italian-born painter and illustrator Jean Mascii, the original poster features the hero dressed in his mythical trench coat and wearing a felt hat.

Mascii is one of the most prolific poster artists of the second half of the 20th century. He is credited with between 1,500 and 2,000 creations for the cinema, recognizable by his finished art of portraiture. Between striking realism and the unreal dimension of faces, his style is intimately linked to the 1950s and 1960s.
