A Masterpiece from the Golden Age of Advertising Art

This large-format advertising poster, created in 1923 by French illustrator Jean d’Ylen, captures the energy and optimism of the Roaring Twenties. Commissioned by the renowned Belgian distillery F.X. de Beukelaer, it promotes Balsam, a quinquina-based apéritif, by linking the drink to the fashionable and exhilarating world of alpine skiing.

The central figure—a joyful skier in stylized folk attire—embodies vitality, color, and motion, three hallmarks of d’Ylen’s iconic graphic style. Set against a rich black background, dynamic blue brushstrokes emphasize speed and liveliness, turning the product into a symbol of festive, modern living.

Jean d’Ylen – A Leading Voice in Modern Poster Art

Jean d’Ylen (1886–1938), born Jean Paul Beguin, was one of France’s most prominent illustrators of the interwar period. Originally trained as a jewelry designer, he joined the prestigious Vercasson printing house in 1919, succeeding the legendary Leonetto Cappiello. Between 1920 and 1934, d’Ylen created dozens of memorable posters for major European brands: Cap Corse Mattei, Allary, Fiorino Spumante…

His poster for Balsam is a perfect example of his signature style: bold silhouettes, striking color contrasts, humor, and instant readability. It also highlights the deep connection between visual art and advertising in an era when posters were not just commercial tools but cultural artifacts.
