The Golden Age of Winter Sports Posters

This poster belongs to the great tradition of French Alpine travel posters, which reached their peak between the 1920s and the 1950s. During this period, ski resorts expanded rapidly and illustrated posters became the primary promotional medium used to attract visitors.

Displayed in railway stations, travel agencies, and major European cities, these posters played a crucial role in shaping the image of Alpine tourism. They promoted not only skiing but also an elegant lifestyle associated with winter sports.

Megève occupied a central role in this development. The resort was transformed in the 1920s under the influence of the Rothschild family, who sought to create a prestigious French alternative to the famous Swiss resort of St. Moritz.

The development of the Mont d’Arbois area symbolized this ambition. Luxury hotels, ski slopes, and modern infrastructure helped establish Megève as one of the most fashionable winter destinations in Europe.

The Mont d’Arbois cable car, referenced in this poster, was itself a symbol of technological progress. The introduction of mechanical lifts revolutionized skiing by allowing skiers to quickly reach higher slopes. At the time, these installations represented modernity and reinforced the idea of the Alps as both an adventurous and sophisticated playground.

A Dynamic Art Deco Aesthetic

This poster perfectly reflects the visual language of Art Deco, a style that strongly influenced travel posters during the interwar period.

Several stylistic features stand out.

The skier figure
The elegant female skier descends the slope with a strong forward-leaning posture that conveys speed and athletic control. The stylized treatment of the body and simplified volumes reflects the modern graphic approach of the 1930s.

A composition built on movement
The diagonal slope and the dynamic spray of snow emphasize motion and energy. The red lines of the ski poles and the cable car guide the viewer’s eye across the composition.

Bold color contrasts
The poster relies on a striking palette of yellow, red, and deep blue. This limited yet powerful color scheme is characteristic of lithographic poster printing of the era.

The monumental “Megève” typography
The name of the resort dominates the composition in large, flowing script. Its bright yellow lettering acts as a strong visual signature and reinforces the identity of the destination.

Together, these elements convey the spirit of the time: skiing presented as a modern, elegant, and exhilarating sport.
