Created in 1948 by Swiss graphic artist Walter Mahrer, this poster commemorates the opening of the new intercontinental airport in Geneva–Cointrin—a major milestone in European air travel. That same year, the first direct transatlantic flights landed in Geneva: a DC-4 from Swissair and another from TWA, inaugurating the airport’s new concrete runway.

Mahrer captures this leap into modernity with a powerful composition: the stylized shadow of a four-engine aircraft stretches across the runway, heading towards Geneva’s iconic skyline. The Jet d’Eau, Lake Geneva, the Alps, and the Old Town are delicately incorporated into a panoramic vista celebrating Swiss identity and innovation.

This piece exemplifies the mid-century modern style: bold perspective, clean geometric lines, and a striking pastel palette. It encapsulates the optimism of post-war progress and the elegance of early intercontinental air travel.

Now a highly sought-after collector’s item, the poster is held in several public and private collections devoted to vintage travel posters and 20th-century Swiss design.
