1. Historical and Artistic Context

In the post-war period, Switzerland was reinventing its image as a tourism destination. The "Andermatt Gotthard" poster, created in 1956 by renowned Swiss graphic designer Alex Walter Diggelmann (1902–1987), reflects this pivotal era. It blends modernist aesthetics with a timeless celebration of the Swiss Alps.

Andermatt, a small alpine village in the canton of Uri, lies at the heart of the Saint Gotthard massif, one of the most important Alpine passes in Europe. In the 1950s, the village was growing in popularity as a winter sports resort, thanks to the development of ski tourism and access via alpine railways such as the Furka–Oberalp line.

2. A stylized poetic map

Rather than a scenic depiction, Diggelmann presents a stylized map of Switzerland, where Andermatt is marked by a red heart with a white cross – symbolizing both national pride and the village’s central position. Around it, minimalist figures of skiers and ice-skaters evoke the energy of winter sports.

The deep blue background dotted with stylized snowflakes adds a dreamlike atmosphere, contrasting with the geographical outline. This mid-century visual language reflects the modern Swiss design ethos: symbolic, clean, and visually striking.

3. The artist: Alex Walter Diggelmann

Alex Walter Diggelmann is one of the most prominent Swiss poster artists of the 20th century. Known for his work on sports, tourism, and advertising posters, he is a master of visual storytelling through minimal form. He’s also one of the few artists to have won the Olympic Games poster competition three times (1936, 1948, 1952).
