This large-format vintage French advertising poster, created around 1905 by illustrator and printer Lochard, is a remarkable example of early 20th-century commercial art. Produced using the chromolithography technique, it showcases a clever and humorous design that reflects the style and wit of the Belle Époque.

At the center of the composition, we see Armand Fallières, President of the French Republic at the time, inspecting his freshly polished boots. Sitting on a can of "Papillon Noir" shoe polish—here humorously transformed into a stool—he unknowingly bears a black butterfly print on the seat of his trousers, symbolizing the product's deep imprint… quite literally.

The caption reads:
"Good idea, Marianne, to use 'Papillon Noir' – It will go down in history…!!"
A cheeky nod to Marianne, the emblem of the French Republic, and a bold claim about the product’s effectiveness and legacy.

This poster is more than a simple advertisement. It's a playful visual statement merging political satire, brand identity, and artistic flair—a blend typical of early 1900s French advertising.

This original piece is preserved in the Musée de Bretagne (Rennes), having entered its collection in 1933. It remains one of the finest examples of how humor and visual storytelling were masterfully used in public commercial art at the dawn of the modern era.
