Published in 1965, this rare and authentic vintage poster is a remarkable example of cultural promotion in postwar France. Commissioned by the Musée Matisse in Nice (founded in 1963), it belongs to a series of official art posters created to highlight the region’s artistic heritage and appeal to international tourism.

The vibrant design is a lithographic reproduction of La Danseuse Créole, a cut-paper collage originally created by Henri Matisse around 1950. In the final phase of his life, Matisse, physically weakened but artistically reinvigorated, pioneered the technique of gouache-painted paper cut-outs—a radical method that brought color and form into rhythmic harmony.

La Danseuse Créole is believed to be inspired by Katherine Dunham, the acclaimed African-American dancer and choreographer whom Matisse saw perform in Nice. The piece captures the fluidity of movement and cultural vitality with abstract shapes and vivid colors—an expressive homage to dance, music, and the Creole world.

Printed by the renowned Atelier Mourlot in Paris—a leading lithography studio known for collaborations with Picasso, Miró, Chagall, and others—this poster bridges modern art and the glamorous image of the French Riviera in the 1960s.

Today, it is highly sought-after by collectors for its aesthetic power, historical significance, and rarity. A true symbol of artistic freedom, tourism promotion, and mid-century visual culture.
