The 1924 Olympic Winter Games, officially known as the Iers Olympic Winter Games, were held in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, from January 25 to February 5, 1924. They are held as an "International Winter Sports Week" given as part of the Paris Games and under the patronage of the IOC.

At the instigation of the French National Railway Company, Paris-Lyon-Méditérranée, Auguste Matisse delivered a poster in homage to the winners of these Games. A royal eagle carries a bouquet of flowers tied with a ribbon in the colours of both France (host country) and Norway (winner country).

Mainly known for his representations of maritime landscapes, the artist is honoured with the title of official Navy painter.
