After moving to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, Keith Haring quickly immersed himself in the city's graffiti culture. In the mid-1980s, he befriended other artists such as Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities such as singer Grace Jones.

Perhaps one of Keith Haring's most famous images is the poster designed for the 40th anniversary of the New York City Ballet in 1988. It is part of a series of eleven drawings created by the most popular contemporary artists. One can see the characteristic androgynous silhouettes of his work and recognize his synthetic forms with bright colours underlined in black. This type of energetic and rhythmic lines belong in particular to the movement of free figuration.

Keith Haring's works are now in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
