Palme d'or at the 13th Cannes Film Festival, Oscar for best costumes in 1962, La Dolce Vita marks a turning point in Federico Fellini's filmography. Mirror of a marvellous era where everything is turned upside down, of the contrasts of Italian society in a phase of profound transformation, and of the modernity of cinema, the film is today considered a classic of Italian cinema and of cinema in general.

Yet it was the scandal that greeted the release of Marcello Rubini's story in his fruitless search for love and happiness. Portrait of an idle and debauched society, La dolce vita is for J. M. G. Le Clézio "all the painting of the decadence of society, corrupt, drunk, grimacing," and Fellini is "the most ruthless witness to the rot of the Western world.".

Designed by the artist Yves Thos, the original French poster features Anita Ekberg in her mythical black dress, leader of the dance and queen of the party, carefree and barefoot in the streets of Rome.
