In the early 20th century, travel became a refined art of living for Europe’s bourgeoisie. Amid this growing enthusiasm for discovery, the Paris–Lyon–Mediterranean Railway (PLM) played a pioneering role in luxury tourism. To attract travelers, it commissioned sumptuous posters from leading artists. This iconic piece by Roger Broders, a master of Art Deco, was created in that spirit.

Produced circa 1920, the poster “Tunis – The Orient at the Gates of Marseille” reflects the romanticized vision of North Africa at the time: exotic, vibrant, and—thanks to the railway—within reach. Broders’ refined graphic style is immediately recognizable: sharp lines, bold colors, structured perspectives. The scene presents a stylized minaret rising above the sunlit Medina of Tunis, framed by black fig trees and featuring local figures on a donkey, in a picturesque Orientalist tableau.

This work is more than a travel advertisement: it is a rare artifact of colonial-era European imagination, promoting Tunis as both a foreign and familiar destination. Few surviving examples remain in this condition, making it a highly sought-after collector's item appreciated by art lovers, historians, and vintage travel poster enthusiasts alike.
