This poster is an iconic representation of the Belle Époque travel imagery, created by renowned artist Frédéric Hugo d’Alési, a leading figure in the golden age of railway lithography. Designed around 1896, it was commissioned by the P.L.M. (Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée) railway company, then at the forefront of luxury tourism development along the French Riviera.

The composition presents a refined panoramic view of Monaco, framed by Mediterranean flora, roses, and citrus fruits, inviting the viewer into a world of leisure and elegance. The inset illustration highlights the Valentia Thermal Baths, once located in Monaco’s La Condamine district – a renowned seaside spa destination during the late 19th century, promoted for both summer and winter use.

Hugo d’Alési’s hallmark style is evident in this work through his aquatint-like chromolithographic technique, which required up to 20 color passes to achieve its soft, nuanced quality. The result blends pictorial delicacy with architectural precision, characteristic of the finest lithographic productions of the period.

Far beyond a travel advertisement, this poster stands today as a rare and valuable historical artifact, emblematic of the era when art, travel, and technology converged on the walls of train stations and luxury hotels.
