Original poster from 1951 drawn by Alain Cornic : Map of French West Africa.

From 1895 to 1958, French West Africa (F.W.A.) was a general government of eight French colonies in West Africa. It eventually brought together Mauritania, Senegal, French Sudan (later Mali), Guinea, Ivory Coast, Niger, Upper Volta (later Burkina Faso), Togo and Dahomey (later Benin).

Alain Cornic's highly graphic style lends itself perfectly to the exercise of decorative maps. This intensely coloured work highlights the diversity of West African territories, its fauna and flora, in a composition that borrows the codes of African art.
