Belgian painter, watercolourist and lithographer, Jules Lentrein's work is rich in seaside scenes and representations of boats. He is at the origin of some posters for Belgian transport companies, and in particular for the Belgian State Railway Company.

Although late, this original poster still bears the traces of the Art Nouveau movement. Translated into the two national languages, French and Dutch, it promotes ferry trips between Oostende and Dover. The Belgians called "Malle" the ferry that provided a regular link between Belgium and England.
The Ostend-Douvres line has always been a forerunner in the Channel: its ships benefited from the latest innovations and were the fastest. In the drawing, a clever stratagem illustrates the splendour of these ferries: a small sailing boat stands out at the foot of the "Malle", the contrasting effect making them even more impressive.

The poster therefore presents one of the imposing ships of the Belgian State Railways Company, arriving in port, awaited by a woman dressed in a casual and delicate outfit typical of the 1920s. She is accompanied by an employee of the company and carries her child on her lap in a sailor's outfit, a trend in European bourgeois circles that died out in the 1930s.
