The Compagnie des Chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée, commonly referred to as Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée or under its acronym PLM, is one of the largest private French railway companies. In the 19th century, the opening of railway lines linking Paris and eastern Provence, and PLM became the company par excellence for holiday departures. Rich foreigners got into the habit of spending the bad season on the "French Riviera", for which the publicist Stephen Liégeard invented the term "Côte d'Azur" in 1887.

The destination developed rapidly from the end of the century and PLM began to promote the region through the publication of so-called "travel posters". Often published by the Moullot printing works in Marseille, they are very colourful and reveal all aspects of Provence: enchanting landscapes, prestigious monuments, picturesque customs.

Painter, poster artist, lithographer, portraitist, illustrator and decorator, David Dellepiane and his work are intimately linked to the history of Provence. Influenced by Japanism, the birth of Art Nouveau and then Art Deco, he borrows from them an original interpretation of framing, which he will notably use in his advertising projects. This poster, delivered around 1910 to PLM, perfectly illustrates the point: a richly dressed young lady is enjoying the view of the coast during a walk. The artist also seems to be using Hugo d'Alési's technique, which imitates watercolour.
