Melody in the basement is the film adaptation of the novel The Big Grab of John Trinian. In the lead roles, Alain Delon and Jean Gabin, who play an old crook recently released from prison and a young gangster who are about to rob a casino, the Palm Beach in Cannes.

It was Michel Audiard's idea to adapt the novel to the cinema. The film was colorized by the American company CST in 1994: it is the fifth film by Henri Verneuil and the fourth film with Jean Gabin to be colorized. Although no complete scenes were cut, this second version of Melody in the basement is thirteen minutes shorter than the original version.

It was Roger Soubie who promised "100,000 volts of suspense" and signed this 1963 poster. One can recognize his talents as a portrait painter in the incredible expressiveness of Gabin and Delon's faces, especially in their looks, deep for one and piercing and determined for the other.
