The Fantastic Plastic Machine is an American documentary film following a group of Californian surfers on their way to a competition in Australia. Directed by Eric and Lowell Blum in 1969 and narrated by actor Jay North, its soundtrack is composed by Harry Betts (released as an album by Epic Records). It features real surfers: Skip Frye, Mike Purpus, Steve Bigler, Mickey Munoz, Peter Johnson, Margo Godfrey, Robert Lindkvist, Ed Farwell...

Shot in California, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, the film deals with self-discovery, the search for rebirth in the depths of the ocean. "Some seek each other in defiance of the mysterious forces of the sea..." (Some search for themselves by challenging the mysterious forces of the sea...) announces the poster with a particularly sober composition. In a blue square, a superimposition of images lets us guess the immense wave that seems ready to fall on the black silhouette of the surfer at the bottom of the image. Earth, sea and sky, shapes and colours merge and become one.
