The Mackan American gangster movie released in 1973, tells the story of life and the rise to prominence in Oakland of John "Goldie" Mickens. He gets out of prison after serving time for drug trafficking, and he goes intos a new career: pimping. The film is directed by Michael Campus and has the following cast Max Julien, Don Gordon, Richard Pryor, Carol Speed, Roger E. Mosley, Dick Anthony Williams, William Watson, George Murdock or Juanita Moore.

It is possible to say that the seventies are split in two: on the one hand the rejection and decadence of the hippie movement, and on the other hand opulence and a lifestyle espousing the consumer society. The poster, designed by Fred Pfeiffer, perfectly illustrates the fashion of the latter (beautiful car, fur, banknotes, costume, ostentatious jewellery, big glasses, afro cut...). Goldie's character is representative of a whole lifestyle well expressed by the formula "The biggest and the best". He is the archetype of the "pimp".

From a graphic point of view, the style of the poster is representative of codes often used at that time: thick and stylized typography, recurring colors (black and orange contrasting with the white background)... One can for example think ofOrange Mechanical by Stanley Kubrick (1971).

Finally, there are several references to Cinerama Releasing Corporation. This is an independent film distributor that had the particularity of not retaining copyright. From 1966 to 1974, the company distributed more than 125 films.

The MackThe band, which has become a cult in its own right, finds many references in popular culture and particularly in hip-hop (Jay Z, Dr Dre, Chance the Rapper, A$AP Mob or Tony Scott for example). The film is part of the sub-genre called "Blaxploitation" which emerged in the early 70s in the USA. Although the Afro-American community occupies for the first time the central place, it is however characterized by an excessive stereotyping of the characters.
