The Golden Age of Commercial Aviation in the Middle East

This remarkable advertising poster illustrates one of the most fascinating periods in the history of air transport: the rise of national airlines in the aftermath of the Second World War, when commercial aviation became a symbol of modernity, progress, and openness to the world.

Created to promote the young airline Air Liban, founded in 1945, this poster reflects Beirut’s strategic role as an aerial crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. At the time, major airlines competed creatively to attract a still-emerging international clientele. Illustrated posters thus became true visual ambassadors of travel.

Artist Vincent Guerra, a poster designer active in the mid-20th century, created here an emblematic composition of post-war tourism iconography. His style combines graphic simplification, luminous colors, and cultural symbolism—hallmarks of the great travel posters of that era.

In the foreground, a female figure dressed in traditional attire carries a basket of oranges, a poetic evocation of Mediterranean abundance and Lebanese hospitality. Behind her unfolds an idealized landscape where sea, mountains, and the Cedar of Lebanon—the ancient tree that has become a national symbol—meet in harmonious balance.

In the clear sky above, a propeller aircraft—typical of the planes used by airlines in the 1940s and 1950s—glides elegantly through the air, embodying the promise of a world now accessible by flight.

The stylized map depicting Air Liban’s flight routes recalls the airline’s ambition: to connect Beirut with the major cities of the Middle East and the Mediterranean—Damascus, Baghdad, Istanbul, Cairo, and Jerusalem—positioning the Lebanese capital as a key hub of regional aviation.

Today, such posters stand as valuable testimonies to the golden age of air travel, a time when flying was still a rare privilege and when airlines entrusted their image to talented illustrators rather than photography.

With its luminous aesthetic and rich historical context, this Air Liban poster captures both the adventurous spirit of post-war travel and the graphic elegance of the great advertising posters of the twentieth century. ✈️
