Created during the Cold War era, this striking original poster was produced for the Tierpark Berlin Friedrichsfelde, East Berlin’s monumental zoological park established in 1955 as the socialist counterpart to West Berlin’s famous Zoological Garden.

Rather than using conventional zoological illustration, the artist embraced a bold modernist visual language inspired by expressive watercolor painting and mid-century European graphic design. The vivid tropical palette, spontaneous brushwork and minimalist white background give the composition an almost contemporary feel despite its historical origins.

The macaws themselves symbolize escapism and fascination with distant worlds — themes that resonated strongly within East German visual culture during the divided Berlin years. This poster perfectly captures the optimistic and artistic spirit promoted by East German cultural institutions during the 1960s.

Today, original Tierpark Berlin posters are increasingly collectible for their rarity, artistic quality and historical significance within the visual culture of the DDR.
