An iconic exhibition poster from modern art history

This original poster was produced in 1960 for an exhibition dedicated to Kees van Dongen at the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, France. Created par l'atelier Mourlot from Paris and limited at 500 pieces during the artist’s lifetime, it reflects the strong institutional recognition Van Dongen enjoyed at the time as one of the leading figures of early 20th-century modern art.

The image featured on the poster is inspired by Van Dongen’s famous portrait “Le Coquelicot”, depicting an elegant woman wearing a striking bright red hat and dramatic eye makeup. This bold aesthetic perfectly captures the expressive visual language associated with the Fauvism, the revolutionary movement to which Van Dongen was closely linked alongside artists such as Henri Matisse and André Derain.

By the late 1950s and early 1960s, Van Dongen had already established himself as one of the most celebrated portrait painters of Parisian high society. His distinctive style—characterized by vivid colors, elongated figures and striking gazes—captured the glamour and spirit of modern Paris.

This is one of the rarest and most sought-after posters from the Mourlot Workshops!
