This original Belgian poster belongs to a fascinating moment in European cultural history: the rebirth of modern travel after World War I. Around 1924, tourism evolved from an aristocratic privilege into a new urban lifestyle associated with leisure, elegance and international mobility.

L’Utile et l’Agréable pour le Tourisme” perfectly captures this transformation. Rather than merely advertising travel accessories, the poster celebrates the figure of the modern traveler of the Roaring Twenties. The elegant silhouette, structured luggage, sturdy travel shoes, photographic equipment and ocean liner imagery all contribute to a refined vision of travel as a sophisticated way of life.

The monumental central figure dominates the composition with remarkable graphic strength. Stylistically, the poster stands at the crossroads between:

  • the final echoes of Belgian Art Nouveau,
  • and the emergence of early Art Deco aesthetics.

The simplified forms, geometric treatment, bold outlines and restrained color palette reveal a highly modern composition for its time. The dusty pink background combined with tobacco brown tones gives the piece a striking decorative sophistication still appreciated today.

The ocean liner featured in the lower section reinforces the imagery of cosmopolitan modernity. During the 1920s, transatlantic ships symbolized:

  • international openness,
  • social prestige,
  • speed and technological progress,
  • and elegant adventure.

The mention of “photography articles” is equally significant. The poster reflects the democratization of amateur photography during the 1920s, when portable cameras transformed tourism into a visual and cultural experience.

Printed by the renowned Marci workshops in Brussels, the poster belongs to the golden age of Belgian lithographic advertising. Marci productions are now highly regarded for their contribution to Belgian graphic heritage during the interwar period.

Its rarity is particularly noteworthy. Very few documented examples appear publicly, suggesting either a limited print run or ephemeral commercial use linked to the announced promotional event (“Monday May 19 and following days”).

Today, the poster appeals equally to collectors of vintage travel posters, Art Deco enthusiasts, ocean liner collectors and sophisticated interior decorators seeking authentic interwar graphic works.
