mmerse Yourself in the Poetic and Gently Ironic World of Jean-Jacques Sempé

Step into the poetic and subtly ironic universe of Jean-Jacques Sempé, the undisputed master of French illustration. This poster, titled Le Balto, captures with inimitable grace the quiet effervescence of a Parisian neighborhood — Haussmann buildings, bustling café terraces, and the hum of city life. Everything is here: Sempé’s delicate linework, his amused observation of everyday scenes, and that gentle elegance that makes his art so timelessly enchanting.

Created as part of a Parisian artistic project in 2019, this poster was designed to adorn the famous Morris columns, true icons of the capital’s visual culture. It belongs to a series of 11 urban illustrations commissioned to accompany the renewal of public display structures — transforming the city into an open-air gallery. This piece thus embodies the rare fusion of graphic heritage and contemporary artistic vision.

The scene, rich in detail, evokes an intemporal France. At its center, the lively terrace of a café named Le Balto — a nod to a familiar urban landmark — buzzes with conversation, waiters in motion, and passersby caught up in the gentle rhythm of city life. Here, Sempé unfolds his sharp sense of composition and his affection for those small human stories that intertwine without ever colliding.

Note: The poster is sold rolled, in two parts. Linen-backing available upon request.
