A testimony to seaside tourism in 1930s France

Historical context

In the 1930s, France experienced the golden age of travel posters. The Chemin de Fer de l’État (State Railways) launched ambitious advertising campaigns to attract city dwellers in search of leisure, sports, and sea air.
It was in this spirit that the poster “Les Vacances en Bretagne – Saint-Cast” was created, designed by the artist Peryber. Little is known today about this illustrator, yet his works contributed to the visual identity of French tourism between the wars, alongside the great masters of poster art.

This striking composition captures the vitality and modernity of the decade: a fashionable couple in swimsuits holds a canoe high above their heads, symbolizing adventure, freedom, and sporting holidays. In the background, a lively beach scene evokes family vacations—an especially timely theme after the introduction of paid holidays in 1936.

Artistic and visual style

This poster belongs to the series “Sports à l’Affiche” (no. 191), which paired French destinations with outdoor activities.

  • The bold colors and luminous flat tints reflect the influence of Art Deco design.

  • The elegant athletic couple embodies a new image of Brittany: dynamic, modern, and sporty, far from the old folkloric clichés.

  • A circular vignette in the lower corner depicts the rugged coastline, reinforcing the regional identity of the destination.

Through this composition, Saint-Cast is presented not merely as a family seaside resort but as a prime destination for modern sports tourism, rivalling nearby Dinard and the great beaches of the Emerald Coast.
