A legendary duo, united “with four hands”

Between 1984 and 1985, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) and Andy Warhol (1928–1987) collaborated on nearly 160 artworks, marking one of the most iconic partnerships in contemporary art. Introduced by gallerist Bruno Bischofberger, the two artists forged a vibrant creative exchange—what critics have called a “third mind” in painting—blending Basquiat’s raw neo-expressionism with Warhol’s polished pop language.

A landmark exhibition in Paris

In 2023, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris hosted the major retrospective “Basquiat × Warhol – Painting Four Hands” (April 5 – August 28), showcasing over 300 works and documents, including 80 jointly signed canvases—the largest ever collection of their collaborations.

A symbolic image of creative duality

The central visual of this poster is a powerful photograph by Michael Halsband, taken on July 10, 1985, in New York. Warhol and Basquiat pose like boxers, their gloves symbolizing not conflict, but a creative match—a “fight of ideas” that generated some of the most experimental art of the 1980s.
