The Pagnol Trilogy Illustrated by Dubout — A Journey Through 1930s Provence

Three posters. Three scenes. One shared breath: that of the Mediterranean, the Old Port, and human passions.
A graphic masterpiece serving Provençal cinema.

Albert Dubout created one of the most iconic poster series in French cinema. With his exuberant and affectionate style, Marcel Pagnol’s universe comes to life in three horizontal compositions—vibrant frescoes capturing the soul of Marseille and its famous trilogy: Marius, Fanny, and César.

MARIUS

(Original horizontal poster — The Escartefigue, a festive Old Port)

In this poster, Dubout brings all of Marseille aboard the famous ferryboat L’Escartefigue. Beneath the boat’s bright canary-yellow awning, a dense crowd of sailors, locals, and emblematic characters gathers. We spot César, his mustache proudly bristling, surrounded by the colorful cast of the Old Port. The basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde towers in the background, while a lone fisherman rows calmly in the foreground. Even the sea becomes part of the comedy, with floating barrels and clumsy boats. Dubout’s comedic genius shines through in this bustling scene brimming with detail.

FANNY

(Original horizontal poster — The bustling Old Port square)

A true popular celebration unfolds in this poster dedicated to Fanny. At the foot of the port’s typical buildings, pétanque players warm up, bystanders laugh, children shout, and vendors call out. Signs advertising Marseille soap, pastis, chichis fregis (local fritters), and other southern delights form a picturesque advertising fresco. Behind the lively market, moored boats, tall masts, and red-striped smokestacks complete the scene. Every face is a miniature portrait, with exaggerated expressions. Here, Dubout captures all the comical yet tender hustle and bustle of Marseille life.

CÉSAR

(Original horizontal poster — The son’s departure and the grand parade of notables)

To conclude the saga, Dubout sets the scene in front of the grand white hulls of the ocean liners. On the cobblestone docks, a parade of notables unfolds: three-piece suits, top hats, armbands, medals—all the local dignitaries and merchants have come to bid farewell to young Césariot. Amidst this joyful procession, only the young sailor walks with his head down, more concerned with his fate than with the ceremony. As always in Dubout’s work, the contrast between the crowd’s humor and the central character’s melancholy conveys all the tenderness of Pagnol’s world.

With these three posters, Albert Dubout achieves a rare feat: distilling the entire spirit of Pagnol into a single image. Behind the humor of his lines lies an immense affection for these Provençal figures who have become universal. Today, these works, especially in their original lithographed versions, are extremely rare and stand as a testament to the golden age of French cinema and illustrated poster art.
