Beneath the winding branches of a majestic maritime pine, a young woman, draped in a sumptuous red gown with a white collar, leans gracefully over the stone balustrade of an ornate terrace. Before her stretches the radiant bay of Menton, jewel of the Côte d’Azur, where the golden façades of old houses line up like a suspended theatre between sea and mountains. In the distance, the rosy slopes of the southern Alps form a protective backdrop. A few sailboats glide lazily across the deep blue, while the midday light makes every hue of the landscape shimmer.

This theatrical composition is the work of Hugo d’Alési (Frédéric Alexianu), an undisputed master of Belle Époque travel posters. Created around 1900 for the prestigious Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) railway network, this lithograph belongs to the great tradition of travel posters, where the image itself becomes a promise of escape and an invitation to dream.

At the turn of the century, Menton embodied the ultimate winter paradise. A city of health and leisure, it attracted European aristocracy and the upper bourgeoisie, drawn by its mild microclimate and famous citrus gardens. Here, d’Alési captures the atmosphere of understated elegance and Mediterranean contemplation. The elegantly dressed figure, seen from behind, becomes a silent ambassador for a refined way of life.

The exceptional color quality of this work testifies to the virtuosity of the lithographic technique employed by d’Alési’s own Parisian studio. Every detail — from the foliage to the reflections on the water, from the pleats of the gown to the cast shadows — conveys the visual richness characteristic of Belle Époque stone lithography.

Rare on the market, especially in such remarkable condition with vibrant colors and high-quality linen backing, this poster is now a highly sought-after collector’s piece. It would naturally find its place in a gallery dedicated to travel graphic arts, a contemporary Mediterranean villa, or a library inspired by the Riviera spirit of 1900.
