A Radiant Vision of Postwar Spain

In the early 1950s, Europe was rising from the ruins of war and rediscovering the joys of travel. It was in this context of renewal that the Spanish National Tourist Office commissioned French graphic designer Guy Georget to craft a bright, elegant image of Spain.

This original 1951 poster, simply titled “Spain”, features a stylized Mediterranean seaside scene: a fisherman walks through a whitewashed archway with two baskets of fish, set against a brilliant blue sea and sky. Minimalist and evocative, the composition captures the warmth, simplicity, and tradition of Andalusia.

A Modern and Mediterranean Artistic Language

Georget’s visual language draws on influences from Cubism (notably Picasso and Braque), fused with clean modernist aesthetics and Mediterranean luminosity.

His use of geometric volumes, a limited color palette (white, blue, red), and bold composition speaks to an idealized — almost timeless — vision of Spain. More than a tourist advertisement, this poster offers a mythicized image of a country reconnecting with the world.

An Acclaimed Graphic Artist

Guy Georget was a key figure in French postwar graphic design. Known for his work for Air France, SNCF, and later the iconic La Poste logo (1960), he brought sophistication and clarity to public visual communication.

His work for the Spanish tourism office is emblematic of his talent for combining artistic vision with public messaging.

A Rare and Iconic Collectible

Today, this vintage poster is highly sought-after by collectors of travel ephemera and mid-century graphic art. It represents:

  • a pivotal moment in the history of European tourism,

  • the signature of a master poster artist,

  • and a design that remains visually compelling and culturally rich.
