The 1970s. Post-colonial India is opening up to the world—with flair, exoticism, and a keen sense of visual storytelling. In travel agencies across the globe, a joyful and improbable character takes center stage: Air India’s Maharajah, the whimsical, mustachioed little prince who has been the airline’s iconic face since 1946, created by artist J. B. Cowasji. He embodies Indian hospitality and the joyful art of traveling East.

But in this rare and surprising poster, the Maharajah isn’t selling trips to Bombay or Kyoto. No. He’s sitting cross-legged, serene, in a dreamlike savanna, surrounded by a wild procession worthy of Noah’s Ark: giraffe, lion, rhinoceros, elephant, zebra, buffalo... All neighbors, coexisting peacefully.

The tagline? “Love Thy Neighbour!”
A cheeky twist on the biblical phrase, turned into a message of peaceful coexistence—across species, borders, and continents.
