Since 1980, the French Tennis Federation and the Galerie Lelong have commissioned an artist each year to create a poster to promote the French Open. In 1984, Gilles Aillaud designed the fifth advertising poster for Roland Garros

This emblematic vintage poster representing the 1984 French Open sees Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe compete against each other in a packed room.

With this creation, Aillaud leaves aside his usually cold palette in favour of a dark orange background that is clearly reminiscent of clay. However, we recognize his particular work on perspective and framing, which keeps the viewer at a distance from the subject while physically integrating it into the space. Through the power of suggestion of the minimalist forms that construct the image, we are sitting at the top of the Roland Garros stands, watching the match played by the two little white girls.

Representative of the Nouvelle Figuration, the French artist who contributed to the wall posters of May 68, ralso produces collective works with Eduardo Arroyo, illustrator of the 1981 poster.
