Original advertising poster from 1912 I only smoke the Nile designed by Leonetto Cappiello to promote Le Nil brand cigarette paper.

The Joseph Bardou et fils paper mills were founded in the South of France around 1830. In the 1870s, the company relocated part of its production to the Middle East and in particular to Egypt. This is how the idea of naming one of the paper brands "Le Nil" was born. Advertisements then displayed images of sphinxes, pyramids, palm trees and above all the famous elephant that would become its mascot.

In 1912, it was developed by Leonetto Cappiello, who accompanied it with a new slogan stating that wise smokers "only smoke the Nile". The poster artist also made the bold choice to play with formats: the size of the advertisement is almost as big as an elephant itself.

Capiello's approach was for Renner extremely innovative for its time: "The idea that you don't remember the image of the product itself, but the image of something associated with the product. Cappiello was the first to fully understand this, and he applied it with considerable diligence in about a thousand posters".
